How to Dress for Outdoor Play in the Winter

At Acorn, it’s never too early to start thinking about how to dress your little ones for the chilly fall & winter mornings.

Here’s how to keep them cozy and safe.

Morning Tip: Check the LOWEST temp of the day and subtract 10 degrees for wind chill. That’s the temperature to dress for!

Fuel for the Day: Ensure your child is hydrated and well-fed! A carb-loaded breakfast and snacks will help them stay warm and energized throughout the day.

Getting Dressed

First Layer: Start with a base layer like wool, silk, or polypropylene (NO cotton!).
Mid-Layer: Add a “buff” or “neck warmer” (no scarves!) for heat retention, plus a long sleeve wool or fleece sweater and fleece pants.
Outer Layer: Winter waterproof coat with a hood, insulated waterproof snow pants, wool socks, and waterproof mittens!

Important: Please don’t use chemical hand/foot warmers in mittens or boots – they should go in an inside pocket of the coat or pants.

Rain Gear Tip: DO NOT wash with soap! It strips the waterproof coating.

Don’t forget to label everything.

Let’s keep everyone warm, cozy, and ready to play!
